I think it's fair to say that for Lydia and me it has been a pretty monumental year, a year of extremes. Lydia had a stroke, we lost our dog and dear friend Sherbert and suffered, as many have, at the hands of the recession. So was it the worst year of our lives? Perhaps. Lydia gave birth to our beautiful son, Nathan, and we got married and had a wonderful honeymoon. So was it the best year of our lives? Probably. I think it is fair to say it was both. But at the end of the day (indeed, the end of the year) the fact is that I can come home from work every day and be greeted by the wonderful laughter of my son and my loving wife who is still alive and recovering a little bit more every day. We have a roof over our heads and food on the table. That is so very much more than most people on this planet have and something we all too often take for granted. I believe what I am trying to say is that despite all of the bad things that have happened over the past year, I am still a very lucky man (I'll let Lydia speak for herself) and will never again take for granted the good things we have in life. From now on when good things happen I'll be thankful and humble. When bad things happen I will try to be philosophical. At all times I will try to appreciate what's truly important in life, my family and friends. |
